JUBB David

Total Breakthrough Fund support: £300,000

David was awarded Breakthrough Fund support in 2008 just at the time that Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) had secured a 125 year lease from Wandsworth Borough Council on its 19th century town hall home, securing its future in the light of threatened cuts. The grant supported a number of areas of innovation at BAC, identified and prioritised by David as the three years progressed, and provided funding for the dual artistic leadership model that had just been put in place between him and David Micklem.

The grant supported activity in a number of areas, including the start of a collaboration with architects Haworth Tompkins which has transformed their approach to the building with Playgrounding – a methodology for scratching architectural projects with artists and other users of the building – and has culminated in a major capital project, currently in progress. Other activity included new models of commissioning and producing artists to make work for young people, new approaches and ways of hosting artists’ residencies, and organisational change to introduce a new project working culture across the organisation at BAC. The grant concluded in 2011.
