Over 200 guests joined us from across the art world to hear our Chair Jane Hamlyn announce this year’s recipients.

For 24 years, the awards have supported artists with financial assistance at a pivotal moment in their careers. Each award offers recipients £60,000 with no obligations or conditions as to how the money is used. Not only the largest award in the UK, this “no strings attached” approach sets the awards apart by giving artists the time and freedom to develop their creative ideas and to further their personal and professional growth.

Jane Hamlyn, Chair, Paul Hamlyn Foundation said: “Finding the time to reflect, explore and experiment – to produce new work or move into a new phase of creative expression – is not always easy for visual artists and composers. Awards for Artists has sought to address this need and is an ongoing commitment for the Foundation.”

This year’s guest speaker, Kwame Kwei-Armah, actor and award-winning British playwright, reminded guests that now, more than ever, we rely on artists to help us understand the confusing world in which we live.

That’s why we think it’s so important that artists have the time and the space to develop their practice and explore new ideas.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the recipients and thank everyone who made the awards possible, especially the judges and nominators. We would also like to extend our thanks to Kwame Kwei-Armah for reinforcing the value of artists.

Full biographies and examples of each artist’s work can be found on here.
